When we think of hunting, we often imagine the moment of success. You know the one, the Grip and Grin picture with your downed animal. I want to take a step back for a moment to share the most critical steps to making sure that the success picture is even possible.
For rifle season, especially, most folks assume that the rifle is as perfect as it was the last time we stored it in the safe or on the wall. One of the most critical pieces to ensuring success is a quick check on all the set screws on the rifle and scope mounts. It only takes a moment, but this could be the make-or-break of a missed shot or loads of rounds sent down range before you realize that the scope is loose and out of place. Sometimes things loosen or jostle while packing in/out, riding strapped to an ATV or side by side, or even if you fell while hunting last year. Once your rifle is checked, it is ready to confirm zero.
Next up is the range review. It is wild how many things can alter shot performance. Different temperatures, altitudes, and any changes to the ammunition you loaded or purchased all create a significant effect on your shot placement. Be sure to check the zero on the scope and prepare a dope chart for the speed and velocity of the ammo that you will be hunting with. This will ensure the closest accuracy possible.
Lastly, practice getting into as many positions with your rifle as possible. Standing, sitting, kneeling, and even prone shooting will get you in tune with the quickest sight picture acquisition and the most predictable and repeatable shot ability. This will grant you the best chance of success when your target buck is in the crosshairs!
The top three items to check from your list for early-season rifle readiness are:
- Check the rifle for any blemishes, damage, or loose screws.
- Range readiness and recheck of your zero.
- Practice shooting from a variety of hunting scenario positions.
If you work these three items on your rifle prep checklist, you are ready!
